A young Drumkeen teenager has become the first Donegal boy to be crowned ‘King of Aghadowey Oval’ racing track!
Like father, like son: Andrew Russell Junior (14) took the title at the weekend at the famous racing venue in Coleraine, Derry. Back in August his dad, Drew, was crowned the Irish Hot Rod champion for the third successive year.
A student at St Columba’s College, Stranorlar, he successfully manoeuvred a tricky win in the first heat in a 16 car grid.
Heat 2 was a complete reverse grid with some brilliant racing from the boys and girls. Andew was up as far as 7th when the yellow flags came out the race had to be restarted. He took a good 4th place finish in this race and won the fourth heat outright.
That was enough to land him pole position in the final. With the green flag dropping, the race was on and he made a great start with Harry Minish coming on very strong in the last few laps. Andrew, however, kept the wheels clean and in the right direction and took the win.
This is reportedly one for the history books as he becomes the first Donegal lad to win King of Aghadowey Oval.
His team paid a big thanks to Trevor McConnell from McConnell Motorsport for a well maintained winning car and to Curtis Preston for the photos and John Wolsey.
