Ballybofey man involved in Xbox scam is fined

A Ballybofey man who conned another man out of a deposit for an Xbox has been fined after appearing in court.

Joe Chambers, aged 21, appeared at Falcarragh District Court charged with making gains by deception or loss under the Theft and Fraud Offences Act.

Sergeant Jim Collins told the court that on March 3rd, 2021 a Conor O’Neill sent a sum of €50 as a deposit to Chambers of Blue Cedars, Glenfin Road, Ballybofey.

The court heard that Mr O’Neill, who is from Cork, read about the X-Box on Facebook and had contacted Chambers.

However, despite sending the deposit, Mr O’Neill never heard from Chambers again.

Solicitor for the accused, Mr Patsy Gallagher, said his client is currently a carer for some family members and that he has had addiction issues in the past.

“He is trying to get himself back on the straight and narrow,” added Mr Gallagher.

The court was told the €50 has been returned to Mr O’Neill since.

Judge Éiteáin Cunningham found the facts proven and fined Chambers €150 and gave him five months to pay.
