The FIFA World Cup draw is one of the most exciting and anticipation-filled football events. It’s the time when dreams are born and rivalries ignite, all dictated by the seemingly random drawing of balls from a pot. For years, our World Cup Simulator allowed you to experience this thrill, generating realistic draws based on official FIFA rules and team pots.
What if you don’t want to leave it to chance? What if you had a precise vision of the tournament? A dream “Group of Death,” a perfect path forward for your oppressed nation, or a scenario you desperately want to see come true?
Today, we’re putting that power directly into your hands. We are incredibly excited to announce the launch of our brand new Manual group draw functionality! You are no longer just an observer; you are now the ultimate ranking committee, creating the very fabric of the 2026 World Cup groups.
What is manual drawing?
The manual draw feature allows you to bypass the automated draw and carefully select each team for each group (Groups A to L) of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Think of it like putting yourself in FIFA’s shoes before the official ceremony. You control which team enters which group, allowing you to:
- Forge epic rivalries: Do you want to see Brazil and Argentina in the same group? Now you can!
- Create “Death Groups”: Gather the toughest quartet possible to challenge the giants.
- Engineer’s dream path: Give your favorite team a clear path to the round of 16.
- Analyze specific scenarios: What if a certain team lands in a particular group? You can now test this exact premise.
This feature is a direct addition to our recent release Manual group stage seedingwhich allows you to manually set 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th places within a group. Now you can control the entire process from the very first team selection!
How It Works: Your Ranking Board Game Guide
We have integrated the manual drawing of groups directly into our Team Pots Page to make the process as intuitive and powerful as possible. Here’s your step-by-step guide to becoming the World Cup draw master:
Step 1: Go to the Team Pots page
Start by visiting the Team Pots Page on our simulator. This is where you will see the 48 qualified teams neatly organized into their respective four pots (Pot 1, Pot 2, Pot 3, Pot 4) based on their FIFA rankings.
Step 2: Enable Manual Drawing Mode
Look for a clearly visible toggle or button that allows you to switch from “Automated Drawing” to “Manual Drawing”. Once enabled, the interface will change to allow team selection for groups.
Step 3: Assign teams into groups (while respecting FIFA rules!)
This is where the magic happens. For each of the 12 groups (A to L), you will assign a team from each pot. You can do this by dragging teams from pots to group slots or using the interactive drop-down menus.
Above all, our simulator always applies all the official constraints of FIFA draws:
- Placement in the host country: The three host countries (United States, Mexico, Canada) are automatically placed in their pre-assigned groups (Group A for Mexico, Group B for Canada, Group D for United States) to guarantee that they will play their group matches at home. You can’t move them.
- Confederation clashes: You cannot place two teams from the same continental confederation (e.g. two CONMEBOL teams) in the same group, with the exception of Europe.
- European limit: A maximum of two European teams (UEFA) are allowed in the same group.
Our system will provide real-time feedback, preventing you from making an invalid draw. This ensures that each group combination you create constitutes a realistic and valid scenario under FIFA’s complex rules. Want a reminder of these rules? Check out our World Cup 101: How the group stage and draw actually work.
Step 4: Complete all groups (AL)
Continue to distribute teams until all 48 teams are placed in their 12 groups. The interface will guide you by telling you which slots are occupied and which still require a team.
Step 5: Take the next step
Once all groups are populated with your custom selections, you can then choose your next step:
- Simulate the group stage: Click “Simulate Group Stage” to let our ELO-based algorithm play your manually created groups and determine who advances.
- Manual classification of groups: Use our other new feature to manually set 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th places within your custom groups (as detailed in our Group Stage Manual Ranking Guide).
From there, the simulator will automatically generate the 32-team knockout bracket, paving the way for your personalized tournament.

After your personalized draw, your groups are ready for simulation or manual ranking, leading to the elimination phase.
Why this feature is a game changer
The manual group draw feature offers an unrivaled level of customization and insight, transforming the way you compete in the World Cup.
1. Create your dream (or nightmare) scenarios
- The ultimate “death group”: Do you have a specific combination of powerhouses and dark horses that you think would make the most exciting group? You can now group France, Germany, Uruguay and Japan.
- Test rivalries: Create a group made up of traditional rivals who might not otherwise meet in the first place.
- Favorable draws: See what happens if your team is a really “easy” group.
2. Tailor-made challenges
For those who participate in office pools, fantasy leagues, or online challenges, this is an invaluable tool. You can perfectly reproduce a desired (or planned) draw, then carry out simulation or manual classification of the group stage to complete your draw.
3. Further analysis of the draw
Even with a manual draw, our simulator’s application of FIFA rules provides powerful learning opportunities. You’ll quickly see how difficult it can be to create certain “dream” matchups due to the constraints of the confederation. This helps demystify the complex process of the draw itself. OUR 2026 World Cup Draw Analysis Report already uses simulations to uncover structural risks; you can now test your own theories on a micro level.
4. Unleash your football intelligence
Whether you think your team can defy the odds or want to demonstrate your superior soccer knowledge, this feature allows you to create a tournament story that truly reflects your ideas. It’s a sandbox for your footballing imagination, allowing you to answer any questions you have about the draw.
Combining the best of both worlds: manual draw + manual ranking
With the addition of the manual draw and the existing Manual group stage seedingyou now have complete and granular control over entire group stage:
- You decide who is in each group.
- You decide who finishes where in these groups.
This unprecedented level of customization ensures that every element of your tournament reflects your precise predictions and desires. You can then let our simulation handle the knockout phase, or even take manual control there too! Your World Cup, shaped by you
The 2026 World Cup is shaping up to be the biggest and most exciting tournament ever. Whether you’re a casual fan, a seasoned analyst or a challenge enthusiast, this feature will enhance your World Cup experience.
