Antoine Semenyo scored the only goal of the match as Manchester City closed the gap at the top of the Premier League to just two points.

Pep Guardiola’s side managed to withstand a first-half siege from Leeds and regained the momentum of the match through Semenyo’s strike as half-time approached.

The onus is now on Arsenal – who play Chelsea on Sunday – to win and restore the lead to five points.

Leeds flew out of the blocks, pressing aggressively and pinning City deep in their own half.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin repeatedly threatened behind the City backline and should have done better with his first opportunity in the opening exchanges.

Leeds had eight shots before City registered their first, and 10 touches in the opposition box before City managed one.

It was a thrilling start under the lights and the family atmosphere is something Leeds have exploited to good effect historically. Prior to this match, Leeds had not lost any of their previous 25 league or play-off matches at Elland Road which started after 5 p.m., winning 20 and drawing five, since a 6-1 defeat to Liverpool in April 2023.

The key question was whether the home team would be able to maintain the intensity.

Around 10 minutes before the break the momentum shifted as Leeds’ energy waned. City weathered the storm and gradually began to exert their own pressure. Omar Marmoush and Nico O’Reilly were both denied in the same minute as the balance of the match tipped.

Just before half-time City struck. Semenyo, operating centrally in place of Erling Haaland, gave the visitors the lead, after Rayan Aït-Nouri surged towards the touchline and pushed the ball back across the goal.

Since his Premier League debut with City on January 17, only Cole Palmer and João Pedro (six each) have been involved in more league goals than Semenyo, who now has five (4G, 1A).

Leeds must have regretted their waste in front of goal. Their first-half expected goals total of 1.24 was the highest City have conceded in the first 45 minutes of a Premier League match this season. But they couldn’t make it count.

City’s approach in the second half was controlled. They monopolized possession (56.3%) and limited Leeds to just six shots worth 0.2 expected goals.

The home side rallied in the final 10 minutes, launching a series of long throws through Ethan Ampadu and pushing bodies forward.

However, City held on. They know how to handle a chase, especially when chasing Arsenal. City have lost just one of their last 14 Premier League matches the day before the Gunners, winning 10 and drawing three, with the only defeat being a 2-1 defeat to Newcastle earlier this season.

The gap at the top is back to two points. Over to you, Mikel Arteta.
