Advantage on the field? Analysis of the 2026 World Cup routes for the United States, Mexico and Canada

Editor’s note: This is part two of our three-part series analyzing 1,000 computer simulations of the 2026 World Cup. Read part one: The inevitable blockbusters.

Hosting the World Cup is a dream, but it comes with unique pressure. For the United States, Mexico and Canada, the 2026 tournament is about more than just participation; it’s about making a deep run on home soil. But does home advantage translate into an easier path?

Our 1000 tournament simulations reveal a mixed bag for the North American trio. While the draw a structure guarantees them all seeded status (Pot 1), simulation data suggests their journey will be anything but simple.

From a potential “North American Derby” to a haunting rematch of 2014, here’s what the data predicts for the hosts.

🇺🇸 Team USA: The “Revenge Tour” course

The United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) enters Group D as the favorite, and the simulation confirms it. The data overwhelmingly indicates that the United States wins its group and advances to the round of 32. San Francisco Bay Area (Game 81).

The round of 16: a regional shock?

  • Most likely opponent: Qatar (15.6%)
  • The shock scenario: Canada (9.9%)

Even though Qatar is statistically the favorite, the data reveals an eye-watering 9.9% chance that a United States vs. Canada confrontation from the very first knockout round. A knockout derby between two hosts would be an electric and historic event at Levi’s Stadium.

Round of 16: the return of the Belgian nightmare

If the United States survives the round of 16, the simulation predicts a huge obstacle in Seattle (Game 94).

  • Most likely match: Belgium vs. United States (25.4%)

This is one of the most likely matches in our entire dataset. The draw appears designed to pit the winner of Group G (likely Belgium) against the winner of Group D. For American fans, it brings back painful memories of the 2014 round of 16, in which Tim Howard made 16 saves in a heartbreaking defeat. In 2026, the United States could have the opportunity to take revenge on its own turf.

🇲🇽 Mexico: England’s test

Mexico’s journey is fascinating. As the top seed in Group A, El Tri is expected to win the group and play in Mexico (Match 79).

The round of 16: defending Azteca

  • Most likely opponent: Saudi Arabia (9.9%)

The simulation indicates that a clash with Saudi Arabia would be the most likely outcome of Mexico’s first knockout match. It would be a dynamic match at the historic Estadio Azteca.

The round of 16: a World Cup classic?

If Mexico advances, the simulation predicts a colossal confrontation in Mexico (Match 92).

  • Most likely match: England v Mexico (15.2%)

This is the potential for success of the Mexican draw. Facing England in the round of 16 would be one of the most important matches of the entire tournament. It would be a stern test for El Tri’s ‘game five’ ambitions against one of the world’s best.

🇨🇦 Canada: North American rivals?

Canada, hosting men’s World Cup matches for the first time, faces a daunting challenge. Classified in group B, they will try to write history. The simulation projects them to land Los Angeles (Game 73) for the round of 16.

The round of 16: Asian powerhouse or Concacaf derby?

  • Most likely opponent: South Korea (15.8%)
  • The Derby scenario: Canada vs. Mexico (13.1%)

This is a massive development in our latest simulations. Although South Korea remains the most likely adversary, the risk is very high. 13.1% probability that Canada will face another host Mexico in Los Angeles. This would be a major moment for CONCACAF football on the world stage.

The round of 16: the European giants

If Canada manages to qualify for the round of 16, the road will become much more difficult. The data predicts likely clashes against European powers.

  • Most likely matchup (Houston): Netherlands vs. Canada (9.8%)
  • Alternative route (Vancouver): Canada vs. Portugal (5.4%)

Whether it’s the Dutch in Texas or Ronaldo’s Portugal at home at BC Place, Canada will need to pull off a giant victory to reach the quarterfinals.

Summary: The hosts’ likely schedule

Based on the 1000 simulations, here is the “most likely” route for the host nations:

Scene Date Place 🇺🇸 Opponent of the USA 🇲🇽 Opponent of Mexico 🇨🇦 Canada’s opponent
R32 July 1 San Francisco / Mexico City / LA Qatar (or Canada) Saudi Arabia South Korea (or Mexico)
R16 July 6 Seattle / Mexico / Houston Belgium England The Netherlands

PakarPBN

A Private Blog Network (PBN) is a collection of websites that are controlled by a single individual or organization and used primarily to build backlinks to a “money site” in order to influence its ranking in search engines such as Google. The core idea behind a PBN is based on the importance of backlinks in Google’s ranking algorithm. Since Google views backlinks as signals of authority and trust, some website owners attempt to artificially create these signals through a controlled network of sites.

In a typical PBN setup, the owner acquires expired or aged domains that already have existing authority, backlinks, and history. These domains are rebuilt with new content and hosted separately, often using different IP addresses, hosting providers, themes, and ownership details to make them appear unrelated. Within the content published on these sites, links are strategically placed that point to the main website the owner wants to rank higher. By doing this, the owner attempts to pass link equity (also known as “link juice”) from the PBN sites to the target website.

The purpose of a PBN is to give the impression that the target website is naturally earning links from multiple independent sources. If done effectively, this can temporarily improve keyword rankings, increase organic visibility, and drive more traffic from search results.
