Wins for Killybegs in the Senior, St.Mary’s of Convoy in the Junior A and a dramatic comeback by Naomh Mhuire to earn a replay in the Intermediate were the highlights of today’s Championship action.
Killybegs reversed last week’s defeat by St.Nauls with a 0-13 to 1-05 victory in Davy Brennan Memorial Park in Glenties.
Joe Campbell’s early goal got St.Nauls off to a great start but they could only add one more point in the first-half, while Killybegs replied with six points including three from HughMcFadden to lead by two points at half-time 0-06 to 1-01.
They extended that to 0-11 to 1-01 in the opening period of the second-half , Ryan Cunningham getting vital scores. Four points from frees by Stephen Griffen brought St.Nauls back into the game , leaving just three between them but two late Jack McSharry points secured the win for Killybegs, their first this year , to ensure their Senior Championship status for 2024.
St. Nuals will now await the result of next week’s other play-off fixture between Milford and St.Michaels , afterwhich they will play the losers of that game in the final Relegation play-off with the losers dropping to the Intermediate Championship next year.
In the Intermediate Relegation clash at O Donnell Park Naomh Mhuire scored three injury-time points to earn a draw that didn’t look likely for long periods against Burt.
The Burt men led for most of this game and at 2-08 to 0-11 points ahead as it entered injury-time they looked likely to retain their Intermediate status with what would have been their first win.
However, Naomh Mhuire were not going to lose without giving everything they had and aided by a long injury-time period they scored three points to earn a draw and a replay next week on a final score of 2-08 to 0-14 points.
In the Junior Championship St.Mary’s Convoy were impressive as they clinched top spot in Group B with a big win over Naomh Ultan , 3-17 to 1-09 .
It was a competitive first-half with Convoy just two ahead at the break 1-06 to 0-07, Joseph McGill getting the goal.
The home team dominated the second-half , goals by Pauric Gordan and sub John Toye and excellent scores from Paddy Dolan 0-09 in total, from both play and frees saw them win easily and take top spot in the Group and clinch a semi-final spot in the championship.
Naomh Ultan finish second and Moville third in the Group and will know their opponents in the Quarter-Finals after the Group A play-off between Na Rossa and Naomh Conaill on Sunday, the winners of that will clinch a semi-final spot while the losers will join third place Naomh Padraig Muff in the Quarter-Finals.
